Dear Freight Stakeholder: The deficiencies of the regions transportation
system could threaten the economy and environment of the New York
metropolitan area. Weve learned what problems are so far from NYMTCs
Regional Freight Plan Project. Now, were at the point of finding out
what we can do about them. Forecasts of the need for additional freight
carrying capacity and renewed existing facilities provide a framework
for the development of solutions. The public should have a hand in
evaluating the proposed strategies and prioritizing the solutions. This
is the time that your input is most important.
You are invited to a meeting of the Freight
Transportation Working Group (FTWG) Wednesday, December 12th
that will feature a presentation and discussion of the NYMTC Regional
Freight Plan, Task 5 report, Preliminary Identification of
Improvements and Solutions. The Task 5 report has been posted on the
Publications page of the project web site for review in advance of the
meeting (http://webservices.camsys.com/nymtcfreight).
The key findings and summary tables of deficiencies and possible
solutions are attached to this letter. To be sure your views make a
difference in the final recommendations, we need to hear from you either
at the December 12th meeting, or by submitting your comments to the
Feedback Forum on the project Web site by December 23rd. Youll also
find the final versions of the prior task reports on the web site.
Because NYMTC was deeply affected by the collapse of the World Trade
Center, Howard J. Mann, the director of the Regional Freight Plan
Project, is not in a position to provide CDs of the reports, as in
the past. But if you have no other means for downloading the reports, a
CD can be requested from Cambridge Systematics by
calling Karen Higgins at 617-354-0167. The FTWG meeting will be held Wednesday,
December 12th 1:30 - 4:00 pm at the NYC Economic Development
Corporation, 4th floor Conference Room, 110 William Street, NYC (between
Fulton and John Streets; subways: 1,2,4,5, J, M, Z, A, C at Fulton
Street). If you plan on attending the meeting, please contact Gretchen
Kunca at 718-482-6512. We hope that you will participate in the
meeting and we look forward to your comments. If you have any questions,
please submit them via the web site or call Carolyn Konheim,
718-330-0550 x122.
Sincerely
yours,

Tom
