Florida Intermodal Statewide Highway
Freight Model

In response to federal and state legislative initiatives and the growing importance of freight transportation in the state's economic growth, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Systems Planning Office is spearheading a major effort to develop an Intermodal Statewide Highway Freight Model for the State of Florida.

The Intermodal Statewide Highway Freight Model is intended to serve as a planning tool for the identification and measurement of truck activity within the state in support of providing adequate highway connection to other modes and regional freight hubs. The explicit consideration of intermodal connectivity is required in planning facility improvements for the Florida Intrastate Highway System (FIHS) and the proposed Florida Intrastate Transportation System (FITS). The model resulting from this project will be used to monitor deficiencies on FIHS/FITS corridors that support the movement of freight and goods. Information from this model will be used in preparing subsequent revisions to the FIHS/FITS Intermodal, Cost Feasible and Needs Plans

The Intermodal Statewide Highway Freight Model will build upon and be compatible with other planning databases and tools supported by the Department. The model shall provide a framework for modeling statewide truck freight activity that is consistent with ongoing enhancements to the Florida Statewide Travel Forecasting Model and supportive of freight modeling activities within urban areas throughout the state.
